MARTIAL ARTS TESTIMONIALS
Reviews from students of Martial Artistry Shaolin Kung Fu & Chinese Wushu in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Kuan Ma (testimonial below)
"I joined Martial Artistry at the age of 20, but not for the reasons most people join. I was tired all the time. No matter how long I slept I was always exhausted the next morning. Never was I truly alert at during any time of the day. Even though I was of healthy weight (almost too light), and had never had health problems, I was a couch potato. Occasionally I had attempted to start on exercise programs, but I always let them fall by the wayside. It was too boring walking on a treadmill for half an hour, or even biking the same route over and over again. It was so meaningless to do the same physical activity repeatedly. I needed two things out of an exercise program. First it had to be meaningful. Swimming just to swim, running just to run, and biking just to bike were not enough. I needed to be doing something for a reason or it just wasnt worth doing. Second, It had to be structured. It was just too easy to blow off something constantly until it was no longer routine. I needed something that was almost as much as a responsibility as an exercise program. That's why I chose martial arts.
Kuan Ma (Martial Artistry testimonial, continued)
"Faced with a sea of faceless, indistinguishable martial arts schools, it was this web site that made the difference. Unlike many other schools, Martial Artistry didn’t even pretend to be all things to all people. Martial Artistry seemed genuinely interested in educating and assisting everyone, even if that meant sending them to another school. The wushu style isn’t for anyone, nor is any style of martial arts, and at Martial Artistry they had a section on choosing the style for yourself. Martial Artistry does not teach crude brutal technique. Here, the focus is not so much on brute force as it is artful redirection and strategy. For some people, that’s the best style, for others it isn’t, and that’s ok. There were other materials and advice to protect consumers from disreputable schools. I highly recommend these regardless of what style you choose. This honesty and acceptance of diversity were what made Martial Artistry different.
"I had always considered myself rather weak and relatively uncoordinated. I was shown differently at Martial Artistry. I was shown how to tap strength I didn’t even know I had. With the training I have received from Martial Artistry I have learned to run faster, hit harder, and jump higher than I ever thought I could. In fact, one of my instructors always marvels at how high I can jump in one of the forms I am learning.
"Now that I’ve talked a little about how Martial Artistry is different, let me say a little about why it is different. There is simply one reason: Head Instructor Sifu Kayne LaTrans. She is interested not only in physical development, but in mental and moral development. As part of one of my graduate business courses, I once asked Sifu LaTrans what the mission statement was of her business. Being the small business that Martial Artistry is, I expected either none, or one that was poorly thought out that focused on generating money. I was surprised by her answer, not only because it had all the elements of a good mission statement, but also because it revealed so much about what Martial Artistry meant to her. I will never forget what she said, "I want generate the best martial artists in the world, not only in physical ability, but also in mind, spirit, and integrity." Those simple words explain why Martial Artistry means so much to me.
Students in the Little Dragons kung fu class learn discipline and courage.
"Greatest Martial Arts school in Albuquerque: My son has been a student at Martial Artistry from the time he was 3 years old. The respect the students learn and the friends they make at this school are outstanding."

I have been training at Martial Artistry since August of 2003, and I can honestly say that it has changed my life. Before I had started my training I had a lot of self-confidence issues that really inhibited my ability to interact in any kind of new social environment. Over the years, my confidence has grown and my physical abilities, which used to be limited, now seem limitless. Because of Sifu Kayne, I had invested a lot of my time and energy into my training, she is a very inspirational, understanding and gentle teacher, whose knowledge and experience seems completely limitless. The environment at Martial Artistry is also quite unique. Rather than being a super intense military-style martial arts school, everyone there is relaxed and learns at their own pace. All of the instructors are very capable and understanding and will even laugh with the students, all the while making sure everyone is getting exactly what they want from their training. I would recommend this school to anyone who is looking for serious martial arts training, wants to get some excercise or even just wants something to do for a few hours a week. Any and all of these things can be met, and the ability students can reach is completely up to them. I can honestly say that joining and staying with the Martial Artistry family is one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life.

Absolutely love it. Wish I had done this years ago, but, as I've discovered: it's never too late. Sifu and the instructors are motivating, giving personalized instruction, and making it fun. Leading by example, they take great interest in the students' training as well as their own. I cannot wait to see how far I can really go. I see this as a good and healthy challenge, and hopefully a lifelong practice.

(see her father's review below)
My daughter Alexandra enrolled in classes at Martial Artistry in May of 2001. She had tried a lot of sports, track, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, ballet, but nothing had really caught her fancy. Although she had great moments in sports, she was very inconsistent. She is quite distractible, and a strong and charismatic leadership figure is extremely important to her. Once in a while she had a great teacher or coach and really flourished, but mostly she ended up with well meaning coaches who couldn’t really inspire her to her best efforts. For several years my wife and I considered martial arts for Alex, but we wanted to carefully select a school. We thought she could succeed at martial arts because of her strength and flexibility, but mostly we hoped she could increase her self control and discipline. We heard wonderful things about Martial Artistry and especially about Sifu Kayne LaTrans from several people. I spoke with Sifu by telephone, described our concerns about how Alex can really be a handful, and she was very warm and welcoming. We watched her teach class one afternoon, and were impressed with the way Sifu is able to inspire a large and extremely diverse group of people to really tremendous efforts. Sifu met with us after class and I was very impressed with the rapport she built with Alex in only a minute or two. We signed her up on the spot.
After taking Alex to classes for a month I was very impressed with the workout the students get. Sifu uses plyometrics, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, and also spends lots of time on stretching. Every student gets a great warm-up and workout before even starting the actual martial arts training. I have played many sports, and I am always on the lookout for a good workout to help keep me in shape. I enrolled in November of 2001. In just a few months I became more flexible than I have ever been in my life, which I think will help protect me from injury in the sports I play. The instructors are very positive and encouraging. They never get impatient and are full of praise when you finally master some technique you had been struggling with. I find the martial arts to be very challenging, yet very satisfying. It is such a great feeling of accomplishment to finally get a form right after working on it for months. I can now do things I thought were physically impossible for me only a few months ago.
Sifu in particular is a wonderful teacher. She reaches everyone, from small children to adults. I have never seen her perform, but the quick demonstrations of forms and stances she provides give a clue of what a wonderful martial artist she is. It is so great to see her demonstrate the forms so you can see they way they should look.

Martial arts is now my daughters prime focus, she has recently been accepted onto the Martial Artistry demonstration team, and she is very excited at this rare opportunity. Alex and I are very happy we found Martial Artistry and Sifu Kayne LaTrans. We highly recommend Martial Artistry to anyone.

Wushu family: My wife, 8-year old son, and I all do wushu at this great school. The instruction is the best in the state, the environment is excellent for kids and adults, and the facilities are wonderful. Sifu has created a fun and friendly environment for students of all ages. I am 61, my son is 8, and my wife is 45; we all love Martial Artistry.

As a parent, my experience of Martial Artistry is very positive. It is a pleasure to interact with owner and master, Kayne LaTrans, as well as the other instructors who assist her in running the office and classes. The number and quality of instructors are impressive. I particularly appreciate the focused attention given to the youngest students. I appreciate that this younger group is given separate instruction that is appropriate for them.
Nick Ienni (review by Amy Ienni, Nick's mother)
I appreciate the efficiency of all aspects of the operation at the school as well as the good humor and camaraderie that is evident. It is nice to watch some fun as well as the very disciplined approach to the martial arts. Discipline and progress seem to be enhanced, not sacrificed, by the more light-hearted atmosphere. My kids certainly enjoy themselves as well as well as work hard. All types of people seem to be enjoying themselves at the school, from the youngest girls to the oldest men, and all the men and women in between who are from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of personalities.
The huge training floor at Martial Artistry
It can be very entertaining to watch several sections of students training at once, some with different weapons, etc, all the while listening to the variety of instructors and students conversing. In a nutshell, Kayne and Martial Artistry as a whole have successfully created a human-friendly recreation that happens to be a potent and disciplined martial art. Swords with a smile! Thank you, Kayne!

Martial Artistry gives new meaning to the concept of self-improvement. Thanks to my very good friend Jason, Ive found an institution that has helped me to challenge myself with greater standards of personal development. The physical benefits that are acquired through the practice of Wu Shu have given me a greater sense of all around physical fitness. The knowledge and mental discipline that are shared and developed through Sifu Kayne LaTrans provide a great foundation for learning quality Kung Fu. Sifu LaTrans positive attitude and respect for individuality make Martial Artistry a truly unique and fun group to be a part of.
Jason DuBois, who introduced Frank Alderate to Martial Artistry.
The practice of Kung Fu requires patience. It can and should be a life long endeavor. Despite any natural physical ability, Kung Fu cannot be learned and properly executed overnight. My experience at Martial Artistry has helped me to set higher goals for myself, while realizing that long term dedication and honest self-assessment are the keys great achievement in all aspects of life.

I have always been a very active and athletic person throughout my life. I played soccer for about fourteen years and I've lifted weights since the fifth grade. Soccer developed speed, agility and endurance, while lifting weights developed strength. However, I tended to neglect balance and flexibility. Not only does the practice of martial arts develop all of these areas, but it also provides practical and effective applications. Self-defense is becoming an increasingly valuable asset in the world that we live in today. Furthermore, the efficient use of strength through proper timing, balance, and breathing can make everyday tasks easier and difficult tasks become less strenuous.
Frank X. Alderate
Sifu Kayne LaTrans shows great depth of knowledge in what she teaches. Students are really encouraged by her ability to clarify what is being taught. The students of Martial Artistry are never stifled by her, or by any of the other instructors. I have always felt that my questions are welcomed by Sifu LaTrans. This has reassured me again and again that I am in an environment truly conducive to learning.
Martial Artistry is as unique as the students who train there are. There is something for everyone.

The students and instructors at Martial Artistry compose an environment that is truly exemplary of the ideals of martial arts. I am very happy and proud to be a part of Sifu Kayne LaTrans school of martial artistry.

"I highly recommend this school for students of all ages."
— Sherry Riddle
I've been studying wushu at Martial Artistry for over 10 years and greatly appreciate the resulting personal improvements in strength, balance, flexibility, and confidence. Students receive individualized instruction, allowing each of us to learn at our own pace. This is significant because it allows students of varying ages, martial arts experience, physical ability, and motivation to progress according to our current capabilities, which also allows for variations by individual. For instance, a student's schedule, goals, wellness, and focus will change from time to time, and the individualized approach allows for continued instruction, paced according to your current circumstances. The instructors guide students to facilitate learning and mastering new techniques. The spotlight attributes that make Martial Artistry a first-class school are the assured physical and mental challenges of learning kung fu and wushu, the consistently outstanding instruction, and the camaraderie among students at all levels. I highly recommend this school for students of all ages.

"Her (Sifu's) time in China, coupled with her continued learning, passes as spirit to her students that one can always be better with harder work and determination."
— Amanda Burroughs
What can I say about Martial Artistry. A welcoming family environment that can provide the correct level of training for anyone. 3 year olds to teenagers to students in their 60's all enjoy a fitness experience appropriate to them. As an instructor, I have seen my own skill skyrocket as I enjoyed watching others learn. Hi flying kicks to more traditional forms, Sifu Kayne knows it all. Her time in China coupled with her continued learning passes a spirit to her students that one can always be better with harder work and determination. A very family friendly place, great if you want to work out with your child, a sibling, a half cousin twice removed, you name it and it can work. After 4 1/2 years at Martial Artistry it is with a heavy heart that I leave soon for college out of state, but I know the things I've learned mentally, physically, and morally will endure.

Fr. Barney Deane (review below)
I have been a student of Martial Artistry studying under Sifu Kayne for a year and a half. I have studied several forms of martial arts over the years, and out of all of my teachers Sifu Kayne is the master who has it all. Sifu's egoless love and mastery of the art of Wu-Shu (Kung-Fu) has created an optimum learning environment for all ages and ability levels. Master Sifu's school focuses on self mastery and personal best, a discipline which brings out the best Wu-Shu each student has within themselves. Master Sifu has set the standard that all schools should aspire to. Martial Artistry is not only preserving and doing justice to the art of Wu-Shu, but is also futhering the art for future generations through Master Sifu's continual study of the art and impartment of the tradition.

A student of the martial arts class for children ages 4 - 8
Martial Artistry is a great place for kids. The kids classes have lots of instructors and this excellent student teacher ratio guarantees your child lots of individual attention with very little time waiting for their turn to do an activity. Also kids get the chance to lead class activities for their peers and present in front of the teaching staff to obtain higher sash levels. This is great public performance experience at an early age. My 4 year old has gained confidence, balance, and coordination and loves his time there. Highly recommended.

I came to Martial Artistry a scrawny college student with no athletic ability whatsoever. My first day I was scared that I would be made fun of, "snubbed," etc. But I wasn't. Each and every instructor treated me with patience and understanding because they knew that everyone had to start somewhere, and they had been in the same boat before. Students here don't compete with one another; we encourage and support each other. The mirror is for perfecting technique, and for self-critique. I've never felt threatened, and everyone at the school makes mistakes and has to practice to make them right again. No one here thinks themself a prodigy, and each student's talent is reflected in the amount of training they commit to. I have never felt so accepted and comfortable in any other environment. I know after a long day, I can look forward to a good workout without dealing with any of the stigma inherent in the many, many other martial arts schools I visited when looking for the right place for me. We don't spend an hour beating the crud out of each other and undermining each other for some holy grail of martial arts greatness. We go there to learn technique, do some forms, and probably fall on our butt numerous times. It's relaxed, it's fun, it's constructive, and it's the best decision I think I've ever made.

Rigorous place & great for kids too: I am a parent of a young Martial Artistry student. I have seen his self-esteem and his inner discipline blossom at this school. He is now an athlete, thanks to the careful instruction and opportunity to excel at his own pace. I checked out several schools and disciplines before deciding on Martial Artistry. It is a somewhat informal atmosphere, yet genuinely respectful. The teachers are humble! The trophies on the wall are evidence that gifted students will get what they need. Not-quite-so-gifted students are treated with patience and respect. There is a reason you see more advanced female students there than at many other schools. Everyone is respected and encouraged. It is truly an atmosphere of good values and expert instruction. I highly recommend it.

I attended this school for 4 months before leaving the state for college, and I like it so much that I come back during every break I have to train more despite being part of a martial arts club at college. The people are friendly and the instructors know what they're talking about.
Sifu Latrans has a more traditional approach to wushu than many schools today and it shows in the proficiency of her students. After only four months at Martial Artistry I had better technique than people I met at college who had been doing wushu for 3+ years.
The optional Advanced Aerials class that MA offers has also helped put me ahead of the game for aerial techniques such as tornados and aerial cartwheels. In fact, I have gotten so far under Sifu Latrans that I will be competing in the intercollegiate wushu championships this spring.
I have never seen anyone turned away or snubbed for physical inability, Sifu Latrans and the instructors are happy to work with anyone who really wants to learn and become proficient at wushu. Attending classes at MA has helped me get in shape, relieve stress, and bond with a great group of people.

ABSOLUTELY the best place in Albuquerque to study Martial Arts! I have studied Judo, Kenpo, and attained a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do. I always hit a wall becoming bored and lost interest within the first year. I have been studying Wu Shu (a style of Kung Fu) at Martial Artistry for four years now. I am constantly challenging myself. I can see that no mater how long I study I will always have something to learn. I enjoy learning and learn more through teaching. For the last two years I have been an instructor for our Little Dragons program for 4-8 year olds. The best advice I can give you is to come down and visit Martial Artistry. You will find a great family environment, caring instructors and assistant instructors, and much more.

My husband and I have been at Martial Artistry for almost a year now and we absolutely love it! We are in our 20s and wanted an activity we could share while getting in some good exercise. What we found at Martial Artistry was all that and so much more. The community of students and instructors is phenomenal. Everyone is friendly and helpful. If you really want to learn Wushu, and have fun and feel encouraged along the way, this is the place. :-D. Going to Wushu is something that I look forward to every week!

My 6 year old son has been studying at Martial Artistry for 2 years. We selected this program over the others we tried out because the student teacher ratio is the best I have ever seen in any kids program and provides for both group experience and one-on-one time during each class. I enrolled him in the classes with the intention of providing him with a fun physical fitness activity, an opportunity to make friends, and a way to develop his own path in life. My son has found all of this and more through Marital Artistry's Little Dragons program. He loves the challenge of learning the martial arts forms and has gained self confidence by achieving these goals. He is also thriving in the environment that teaches the lessons of respect to others and embracing the efforts of hard work. Aside from these character building benefits, he is developing a wide array of fine and gross motor skills including balance, agility, strength, flexibility, and attention to detail. If you could see the smile on his face when he earned his most recent sash, you would sign your kids up right now.

Kyra Gryphon (testimonial below)
As a child I often dreamed of studying martial arts. I even enrolled in tae kwon do in my early 20's, only to drop out after less than a month because of a knee injury sustained in a bicycling accident. Gradually, the dream faded as adulthood responsibilities replaced childhood fantasies. Then one day, in the middle of my 43rd year, I found myself approaching a school because the 9-year-old walking beside me wanted to learn martial arts. Little did I know how much walking through that door would change my life.
That was over a year and a half ago. In that time I have done things I would never have thought possible at my age and in my physical condition. I have learned that my potential is limitless and that dreams can come true. I have found a safe place to learn, improve myself, push back boundaries and challenge myself "mentally, physically, morally." I have realized that even the loftiest goals can be reached, even exceeded, one step at a time. And I have discovered strength within myself - of body, of character, of desire - far greater than I ever imagined.
True, we all have unrealized potential and hidden strengths locked away inside of us. So what was the key for me? Without a doubt, it was walking through that particular door. Martial Artistry is unique. You feel it the moment you enter. Open, friendly, encouraging, tolerant, challenging, harmonious. It is the essence of the place, of the students, of the instructors, of the Sifu. The quality of a school is best measured by the quality of its Sifu, and Sifu Kayne Sirocco LaTrans is of the highest quality - not only a master of wushu, but a master of teaching as well.
I have rediscovered a long lost dream, to study martial arts. Fortune brought me to the best school, with the best Sifu. Adherence to the principles taught at Martial Artistry has brought me farther than I ever imagined. And I've only just begun.

Daniel Robson (review below)
I started training with Sifu Kayne about 15 years ago and learned quite a lot from her for a little over 3 years before some life changes happened and I was unable to continue classes. A couple of years ago I sought her out again when my children began expressing an interest in learning martial arts and to my excitement I found she was still in business. There are not a lot of martial arts schools that can stay in business for a long period of time without truly being good schools and this is definitely one of the best. If you are looking for a black belt mill this is probably not the school for you, but if you are looking for a teacher that will expect only your best and only awards a black belt to those who have mastered around a decade of martial arts training with her, then this IS the place for you. If you want to learn a wide variety of weapons styles, want to learn in a family friendly environment, like to laugh, enjoy respectful people, then this is the right place for you.

I don't have the experience with other schools and martial arts that many other reviewers here do, but I do know that Martial Artistry and Sifu LaTrans have me hooked. The students are indeed like a family, in a very good way. The more advanced students are always willing to help, the instructors take the time that's needed to help (rather than hurrying the students), and five days a week, Sifu provides individual instruction to each and every student in class. I started a couple of years ago, and while I've learned much, I know there's /always/ more, and I plan to continue at Martial Artistry as long as I'm here and it's here.

I have studied under Sifu La Trans from even before she started her own school and have faithfully and gladly followed her throughout the years. Her respectful attitude, broad and deep knowledge and experience of the martial arts, strong work ethic, and wry sense of humor combine to make her an earnest, knowledgeable, capable, rigorous, dynamic, and unique teacher. Likewise, Martial Artistry is a school unlike any other. With no down time, useful and practical practice, one on one work both with instructors and Sifu La Trans herself, and careful attention to details, this school fills all the holes many schools are riddled with. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive and invites you to take risks and push yourself without fear of rejection.
Whether you are young or old, athletic or just finding your inner martial artist, this school caters to all levels of ability and interest. Martial Artistry is truly a large family of those interested in the Martial Arts. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

The study of Kung Fu/Wushu at Martial Artistry is an excellent way to begin or complement your current exercise routine.
I was introduced to Martial Artistry when my son began the Little Dragons program. I was impressed with the care and patience that Sifu and the other instructors showed the very young children. When my son graduated to the 'adult' class, I decided to join in as my '40 year old' thing to do.
The study of Kung Fu/Wushu has been very rewarding for me. Even though I swim and lift weights, the movement and weight bearing elements of Kung Fu has greatly increased my flexibility and toned my body.
Martial Artistry student Jason Oglesbay
My continued study has provided great stress release. I can advance at my own pace. I can 'hit something' when we do pad work. I learn what my body is capable of when presented with new challenges. I can defend myself from a variety of attacks.
Martial Artistry is an excellent school. Sifu is one of the best instructors that I have ever encountered. I have always felt that she is personally interested in my advancement. Her devotion to Kung Fu/Wushu is immediately apparent when you enter the school and see all of the trophies that her students have earned in National competitions, the care put into the Demonstration Team's routines, and the aura of respect for the discipline that everyone at the school shows.
I heartily recommend the study of Kung Fu/Wushu at Martial Artistry. You will find it a very rewarding experience.

I have always enjoyed the martial arts, Karate, Aikido and the like. But when i came to Martial Artistry i got the training I had desired for so long. I have attended this school for almost 3 years now and I have to say, I love it here. This is where i want to be during all of my free time. Having been there a while I found that Sifu Kayne has constructed a brilliant school. The space is very large, the ceiling high (so as to practice weapons like staff and spear) and the environment is a very kind one. The instructors are patient and very nice with new students as well as older ones. All in all, I cannot find anything wrong with this school. No one is ever turned away, unless they are asking for something that Sifu Kayne does not teach, in which case, she is pointing them in the direction they wish to go to find what they are looking for. Martial Artistry is a great school!
I have been a student here for nearly a decade. Using what I've learned hereI have competed in several venues: 1st USKA SW Regional championships, Kumite, 2nd weapons; 1st USKA NM State Championships, Koshiki, 1st advanced weapons. 2nd Desert Dragon International Championships, San da (San Shou). I have watched students come in and not only become better martial artists, but grow as people. If you want mystical, secret-society, magic-powder martial arts, you won't like this place. If you come in and take to heart the lessons Sifu Kayne heartily dishes out, you will find yourself amazed at the things you're capable of accomplishing. There are no secrets here, come and see for yourself. You'll also see we act like a family, not an army (traditional martial arts in China were family-centered). Ask anything you'd like. I am James Esparza, better known as Sparky. I would never trade in what I've been through in this school for anything anyone could possibly offer. but that's just me... -James Esparza
I enrolled my two boys ages 5 & 9 about 6 months ago, and I can't say enough good things about this place. I liked what I saw so much, that I, (37 yo mom) joined! Sifu and the instructors are kind, patient, and encouraging. Every student gets one-on-one instruction time and the atmosphere is always positive and fun. All three of us look forward to our two classes every week. I would recommend Martial Artistry for anyone interested in martial arts. -Jen Vossen
I searched the city for the right place to pursue martial arts, and I have been at Martial Artistry for many years and find it an on-going stimulating challenge. Each individual is independently taught by Sifu who is a national champion and highly skilled, not only in martial arts but also as a patient, methodical teacher. This is an ideal place for anyone, but especially for small children who need to learn skills and self-esteem and for the older individual who needs accommodation for old injuries or limitations. Sifu is skilled at modification without removing the exceptional challenge of this process. -Betsy
The benefits of good health, good people and an awesome martial art make Martial Artistry the best martial arts school in Albuquerque to engage in study. This is the “graduate” school of martial study. Time to get your master’s degree? -Brian Baker
I've been taking lessons at this school for four years now. It's very friendly atmosphere and the knowledge of it's instruction staff make it a wonderful place to learn and practice Kung Fu and Wu Shu. It has many long time students so that's proof that the students are happy!
Many students who have left due to work or going off to college have come back to continue their education in this art. I highly recommend Martial Artistry! -Randy Lantz

This is a great school. Clean, friendly, well organized. Our 5 year old son started about 3 months ago and loves it. The teachers are great with the kids, and for that matter, every older student we've come in contact with is too. A wonderful place for anyone interested in martial arts. -jessicanm
I have trained in many types of martial arts since I was a kid. In each of them I found them to be too linear (lacking imagination). Each time I felt I had learned as much as I could in a year or less.
I came to Martial Artistry in 2005 and was introduced to Wu Shu with my nephew. Every day I learn something new. Things that were seemingly impossible years ago are now as natural as breathing. I know that I have found the right place because I know that there will always be something to learn at Martial Artistry.
I have made so many friends and so many people have touched my life that I cant begin to describe it. It was because of this community and family atmosphere that I began as an assistant instructor. I currently instruct 3-8 year olds in the little dragon class.
You will not find a better school.
I've taken classes in a few martial arts styles but none compare to Martial Artistry. The learning environment is supportive and you can't beat the kind of staggered work out you get. I've lost almost 30 lbs at Martial Artistry since joining the school in January 2011. I enjoy going to class. I love learning wushu. I love Martial Artistry! -Ellie
This is a great kung fu school for people of all abilities and ages. Sifu and her instructors are excellent at teaching a challenging, fluid martial art style in a way that honors both the art and the practitioner. Martial Artistry is especially wonderful for its Little Dragons program--it teaches the technique as well as respect and discipline in a fun, honest, active and friendly manner. This school is also WONDERFUL for people new to the martial arts (regardless of age--seriously, if you've ever wanted to learn martial arts and just "never got to it"--it is never too late, and this school proves it). Plus, Sifu's wealth of experience in martial arts (not only kungfu/wushu) brings value to those who already have martial arts training. In short, this in an great, unique, welcoming, challenging and honorable school. -Amers
Martial Artistry for me was more than a martial arts studio. For 5 years MA was my home, and my fellow students my family. The instruction is top notch, with all learning done at a students own speed. Students of all ages, skill levels, and cultural backgrounds are welcomed, so long as they have a willingness to try and learn. Sifu Kayne is knowledgeable and professional, while being approachable and welcoming to even the most shy of students. Without a doubt, Martial Artistry is the best place to study and grow, mentally, physically, and morally in New Mexico.
All of us like this activity. We always look forward to the two practices every week, and feel good each time. It is a rare kind of activity now a days that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and exercise both your body and mind. -momfortwo
I started a couple of years ago, and while I've learned much, I know there's always more, and I plan to continue at Martial Artistry as long as I'm here and it's here. -Ken
While in college I studied Kung Fu at a school in Denver. After being away from the art for over 30 years I started taking lessons at Martial Artistry. I have now been there for 3 years and love it. Martial Artistry is a very friendly, supportive and family oriented school. Sifu Kanye devotes one-on-one training with each student during every class session. Her staff of instructors are also very friendly, knowlegeable and helpful. This is an excellent place to learn Shaolin Kung Fu. (superpages online review)
During a moment in my life where vengeance, retribution and anger filled my being due to a brutal and unprovoked attack, I was fortunate to enter into the grace of Kayne Sirocco LaTrans. At the guidance of my mother, who suggested I learn a means of protecting myself, I investigated several martial arts schools in Albuquerque. When entering Martial Artistry, Sifu LaTrans immediately noticed my discomfort, my lack of knowledge, and my intentions of recompense. With a soft voice and brilliant ability, she soon made me aware of my misguided attempts to exact revenge. She welcomed me into a school based on the honest nature of Shaolin Kung Fu and Wushu. For the next six years I studied under the most elegant, thoughtful and talented Master of "true" Kung Fu. My anger was washed away and replaced by discipline, effort, and most important...the beauty of what it means to practice an art form proudly displayed at her school. I recommend her teachings to everyone.
Martial Artistry is a well structured kung fu school that teaches it's students patience and discipline along with traditional and some modern shoalin kung fu techniques. All that and you work directly with Sifu in a 6000 sq/ft school full of friendly faces and encouraging instructors, there is no better place to learn kung fu in Albuquerque or (i'm willing to bet) all of New Mexico -LE
I like Martial Artistry because you get to do stretches and they're fun. The forms we learn are fun. The instructors are nice to you and I have friends there. Her name is Talia. I like learning kung fu because it makes you flexible and strong.
If you get to green sash you get to have a war fan and it is fun to play with. You get to do lots of punching and kicking into the air.
This school is a great place to learn classical and modern kung fu forms, what with its large space and friendly atmosphere. This place has become part of my own family, a sanctuary of some sort for me.
Martial Artistry is a very good Wushu school. Sifu, and her Instructors are very approachable and accept all kinds of walks of life. This is a family friendly and encouraged establishment. The instructors have a variety of ways of teaching, but each one is patient and lets you learn at your own pace. There is no urgency to succeed here, you can practice and move on at your own pace. Sifu prices the classes monthly at a very reasonable price that is not damaging to your pocketbook. I suggest is to go give them a try and you will be surprised at the structure, discipline and smiles the students have. -TD
Sifu and her staff present a self paced, modern take, on Kung Fu. I have a 7 and a 9 year old at Martial Artistry, (also had my 5 yr old girl there, she LOVED it but wanted to take *vallet [yes that you be a 'b'] ) and they LOVE LOVE it. The staff is very patient and worked to make sure both of my kids had the kind of attention they needed to succeed.
I had been out of wushu a couple of years. I decided it was past time to get back into it, so I signed up at Martial Artistry. I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I found was a great bunch of students and instructors that are super friendly, highly knowledgeable in wushu, and overall a great school I'm proud to be a part of. Wushu is an amazing martial art, and Martial Artistry is a great ambassador for this great art. You won't be disappointed if you join!
My wife and I have been taking kung fu at martial artistry for a lttile over two years. I think by far this is the best school for learning kung fu, it's a great school no matter your age, and or ability you will not find a more traditional school then here at martial artistry, my wife and I both enjoy the friendly atmosphere that this school has to offer, come try it out you won't be sorry. -Edward M
Awesome: Martial artistry takes great care of your body and spirit. You will be pushed to your limit, and excel in a supportive environment
Great school: I love Martial Artistry!!!!! -wushufreak
Artistry at its very BEST: I have attended Martial Artistry for 6 years and counting. Coming from a background of gymnastics and kenpo, wushu was an incredible draw for me. Under Sifu LaTrans I have learned the value of dedication and diligence. Through her encouraging style of teaching, not only have I learned this delicate art with much attention to detail, but have also learned how to teach the art myself. I have been an instructor at the school for 5 1/2 years and credit my ability to approach instruction for our Little Dragons (ages 4-6) to instruction for adults to the versatility presented by Sifu LaTrans. I would highly recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts taught in a supportive and uplifting environment; a place to learn discipline and respect while still being able to laugh and have fun. The doors are always open to anyone and everyone committed to learning martial artistry.
Wonderful school!: I have been attending Martial Artistry for a couple of months now, and I absolutely love it! I was very apprehensive about joining a martial arts school, and was afraid that I would feel out of place. Happily, after my first phone call (where my many questions were answered with honesty and enthusiasm) and my first practice class, I was hooked. Sifu Kayne, the other instructors, and the other students have all been very friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. The opinion that any of the people (especially Sifu and the other instructors) are snobby or arrogant in any way is absurd! I have felt very welcome and am constantly receiving positive reinforcement from my instructors. Martial Artistry provides a great workout, useful skills, and a welcoming atmosphere. I am definitely there to stay! -Kristen
I have been there a long time longer then most any others there. We do have fun and you really get out of it whatever it is that you seek. If you are there just for fun and exercise you will get that. However if you are seeking something more, if you are seeking the "Gong Fu", if you show the will Sifu Latrans will not disappoint you. After 7 years sometimes i wonder the depth of her knowledge and when it will run short, so far nothing has hindered her progress. Do not let the facade of youth in the school deter you, the school is very good and offers plenty of challenges.
Great Kung Fu School: I've trained at Martial Artistry for over four years and I can only say that it is a great environment in which to learn and grow. Sifu and all of her instructors give excellent guidance and instruction. The school facilities are the best and the environment is fun and friendly. -Frank
Many schools but not many like Martial Artistry: martial artistry offers a full martial arts system that builds a student from the ground up. I have studied martial arts under diffrent instructors from the time I was14 and am now 36. I have known many exellent instructors who have taught me a great deal. Martial artistry has worked to "round" my martial arts experience through wepons and techniques that are both traditional and modern in the chinese martial arts. This school prides itself in assisting students to reach for ever increasing goals. When you participate in a class you can feel that the instructors unsaid motto is "to make you the best martial artist you can be". Also the people at Martial artistry come from a wide background of martial arts experience and are always willing to share knowledge for the sake of continual improvement. The training facility itself is huge and well maintained with the idea of safety always in mind. The school is inviting and is more like coming home than just going to school. -Brian
Since growing up in a small town in North Carolina, I have always been interested in Martial Arts. I can remember watching the old Kung Fu and Karate movies where the actors would speak a few seconds slower than the words of the movie. I would day dream of doing some of the moves and stunts that I would see on these movies.
I never got a chance to train in any kind of Martial Arts due to the fact I never had the time or too broke to pay for tuition. Whenever I moved to Albuquerque in January of 2000, I had just started working and had all of this free time after work. One day I was speaking to a co-worker who has been training in Martial Arts for many years. I was telling him that I have all of this free time after work and I needed something to occupy my time. I was giving him my spill about going to the gym and lifting weights and jogging after work from time to time. It was kind of the same old routine and that I was getting pretty bored with doing it. He brought to my attention had I ever thought about martial art. A light bulb went off in my head. I had told him that I use to dream about training as a kid but I had not thought much about it in a long time. He recommended that I try it out since now that I was working I had the money to pay for it as well as had the time after work to train. He had even suggested that I check out Martial Artistry off of Jefferson Street. He had a lot of high praises for the school.
Since February of 2000 I have been constantly training at Martial Artistry. Some of the things I enjoy most about the school are the friendly instructors that work there and also how down to earth Sifu Kayne can be.
For me Kung Fu is a way that I get my daily exercise without looking at it as a routine work out. Martial Artistry provides for me a way to vent and relieve stress from my daily life. Also it provides an opportunity for me to increase my confidence as well improve myself mentally, physically, and morally. -Darren Buie
I got interested in kung fu through my daughter. It is the only martial arts program that allows us to work out together and progress at our own rate. The high number of instructors allows for constant feedback. Everyone is very encouraging, well informed and fun. -Gale Borkenhagen
I came here to lose weight. I've lost over 30 lbs. My balance, flexibility and reflexes have improved. And I've had great fun doing it! -Randy Lantz
I originally came to Martial Artistry at age 13, wanting to supplement my skills in theater and stage combat with something more "real". Four years later I have gotten much more than that. From my first night in the school, I have been part of a kind and varied community who do more than just instruct me in wushu and kung fu. The whole school takes a genuine interest in helping everyone achieve their best. The fact that I know excellent martial artists from age 3 well into their 50's and even 60's is incredible. It isn't about progressing against everyone else, just doing your best and learning as much as you can. I get out of MA what I put into it in effort and energy. Martial Artistry has been with me during my best and worst times and the students and instructors will always be there to pick you up when you fall. Now as I prepare to enter the world at large as an adult, I know that my time at Martial Artistry has shaped me for the better. Mentally, physically, and morally. -Amanda Burroughs
The study of martial arts has always been a goal of mine, but I kept putting it off deciding I was too busy for it.
I started taking classes at Martial Artistry in April of 2003. It was my first time in any sort of martial arts.
The amount of individual attention I get at Martial Artistry is incredible. The instructors encourage me to proceed at my own rate, and challenge me to improve myself. The constructive feedback the instructors give makes it seem easy to learn Kung Fu, and I feel like Ive accomplished a lot. -Jonathan Milton
I like going to tournaments. I like it as much as math and I like math a lot. The instructors are nice there. Kung fu teaches you self-discipline. You get to tumble in the forms. You can demonstrate kung fu at school but never start fights. -Matthew
I can see that no matter how long I study I will always have something to learn. I enjoy learning and learn more through teaching. For the last two years I have been an instructor for our Little Dragons program for 3-8 year olds. The best advice I can give you is to come down and visit Martial Artistry. You will find a great family environment, caring instructors and assistant instructors, and much more.
I've been with this school a number of years and there's nowhere else I'd rather be. The head instructor knows her stuff and genuinely cares about both the martial art and her students. A great value, and a great place to learn.
If you are interested in learning martial arts, you can't go wrong with Martial Artistry. The instructors are wonderful, the facilities are spacious and clean, and the price is reasonable. Like others, I originally just went for my two children, but ended up joining myself. This is something we all look forward to every week.
After having studied martial arts many years ago, I knew there would come a time that I would touch that path again. When I decided it was time, I first needed to search for a style that would suit my personal journey, a journey that involved a quest for patience, self-discipline, tapping into inner strength, and developing physical strength. I wanted to compete only with myself and find support in my journey. The search led me through many differents styles of martial arts before leading me to Shaolin kung fu. It seemed that this was the seed from which other styles had grown and evolved. A connection with the ancient and spiritual drew me to find a place whee the journey was more important than the goal and where, hopefully, I could spend many years growing and learning.
Next, I looked for a Sifu who not ony had superior martial arts skills but who could transmit those skills with patience and insight into the personal needs and goals of each on committed to the process. I did not take my search lightly and spent considerable time in study and meditation to find the place that was best for me. When I found Martial Artistry and Sifu LaTrans, I felt my search was over. Here, dedication and commitment are rewarded with careful attention and encouragement. Although frustration is my frequent companion, accomplishment and progress reward and facilitate my journey. I am challenged and thriving, and I look forward to a long association with Martial Artistry. -B. Williams
Outstanding Place To Study Martial Arts
This is the type of place to bring your kids and before you find that you have the entire family involved. Martial Artistry has something for anyone.
Not only have i found a place to learn a great and ancient art but also a place to make new and lasting friends that have become more like family to me.
An excellent school. I've been attending for four years and the staff is very friendly and knowledgable. The instructor-student ratio is low so everyone gets very individualized treatment and teaching. A great place to learn without risking getting "lost in the crowd" -Randy
I have a 5, 7, and a 9 year old that just love the atmosphere and patient instruction. Self paced environment and excellent staff make this a great family studio. -E Carroll
This place is great! The facilities are clean, the area is large and they have nice stands to sit in and watch. They also have shelves to hold your things! Everyone is super friendly and supportive. The atmosphere is relaxed and yet serious, so you can work hard and yet feel very comfortable. The instruction is great and I have become, so I like to say, really good going here. I wish veryone could know how great this place is for all ages!! -Alyssa
I started training at Martial Artistry because it was an activity my teen was interested in after we saw a demonstration. This was a great way for us to get some physical activity during the week and spend some time together building skills and confidence. A bit of healthy competition pushed us both to strive for our best. Unfortunately, my teen was unable to continue. Since this type of training was something I never would have gone into on my own; it would have been very easy for me to discontinue lessons also. However, Ive found I enjoy training at Martial Artistry for many reasons.
While I have part-time employment that keeps me busy, my full time job is being a stay-at-home mom. This is the best job Ive ever had, but I truly welcome the chance to get out of the house a couple of evenings per week to train at Martial Artistry. It affords me a chance for physical activity, self-improvement, and a much needed sanity break.
I also enjoy how the training is structured with more advanced students helping newer students. This gives the experienced students a good leadership opportunity and a chance to test their own knowledge. If you can teach a new skill to someone else, you understand the finer points of that skill better yourself. Many, but not all, of the instructors are young people in their teens and twenties. Ive been involved in programs for young people before. In my experience this type of structure where you are responsible for someone who may be older than you, but does not have the same skills, is an excellent confidence builder for the instructor and a valuable learning experience for the student. Instructors at Martial Artistry attend instructor class and follow a written lesson plan. This improves standardization and their teaching skills. In addition, Sifu is always available to answer questions and she instructs each group at least once per week.
Sifu's expertise, experience, wisdom, and gentle teaching manner make her a true asset to Martial Artistry. She provides guidance to help each student improve and perfect the skills theyre learning. She encourages us by praising improvements and making corrections that help us fine-tune the skills we are studying.
Finally, respect is always at the center of this training and that is obvious in the way instructors and students interact with one another at Martial Artistry. At my first lesson, Sifu was explaining how to salute and bow. Part of her explanation was the mutual respect student and teacher should have for one another because we can all learn something from the other.Corrections are made in a positive way that encourages students to perfect their form.
To summarize, a break from my routine, physical activity, a good training structure, a Sifu with a talent and heart for teaching, and an atmosphere of respect are the reasons why I enjoy training at Martial Artistry and would highly recommend it to others. -Sherry Riddle
The instructors will listen to my needs and concerns. They explain things really well and show you how to do things in real life. Every instructor I meet is really nice. I always feel better after my Kung Fu class. -Rhea
A fantastic school with a very dynamic instructor group.. Not just one instructor but a dozen. This school is very dedicated to being a family environment from their Little Dragon program for 3-7 year olds to the the adult classes for every age.
My family took Wu Shu for almost 8 years. I am Chinese. I really like this school because I think only this Kung Fu that we call Wu Shu (Chinese name) in taught in this school. It is very close to real Chinese style Wu Shu. I recommend this school to anyone who truly wants to learn real Wu Shu and is willing to challenge themselves to become a true master of this ancient and respected martial arts style. -Yan
When I first started out at martial Artistry I knew nothing about martial arts. I only knew that I was drawn to Chinese styles for an unknown reason. I picked Martial Artistry because it was the only school teaching Kung Fu that I could afford; being a student. My choice proved to be a great one. My life has been changed forever by Sifu La Trans school. Her training, and the training of the other instructors, has given me a confidence and a drive in myself that I feel could not of been developed any where else. I believe Im in my third year at the school and have come to be in the best shape of my life both internally and externally.
Martial Artistry can provide every kind of strength a person needs. The Wu-Shu / Kung Fu classes will increase balance, strength, flexibility, endurance, and speed; plus the added benefit of self defense that teaches even the smallest, weakest person that they are not totally helpless out there in the real world. The sparring class is rigorous and exciting. Here I have learned to both control my emotions and to act instinctively at the same time when confronted by one or more attackers.
Thank You Sifu, and thank you Martial Artistry for all that has been given to me. -Jason DuBois
-Mr. D
I enjoy the classes because they use up a lot of my energy. It’s really fun, and you get to learn about what to do to protect yourself. You get to learn a lot of interesting stuff. You get to use weapons, which is pretty cool. You get a lot more flexible and you get stronger in your muscles.
I also enjoy it because you don’t have to be really skilled at the beginning to be good at it like in some other sports. All the instructors are really nice, even if you get something wrong. They'll always be really positive if you get something right that you've been working on for a long time.
The instructors teach the forms and the basics to you so you understand; if you don’t understand they’ll explain it again until you get it. They explain things very well.
Sifu is a good leader, and she’s also real nice. She has a good sense of humor, but she’s also very serious about her art. I really like working with her and the other instructors. I recommend Martial Artistry to everyone. -Alexandra Daniels
What can I say about how much you've done for me? You've enlightened me in so many ways. You've shown me a beautiful art which I now call my own and liberated me from the environment in which I was accustomed to for too long. You've shown me your generosity and the great love you possess for your art and the joy it brings you in sharing your knowledge and experience. There are not enough good words in the English language to express my immense appreciation of what you've instilled in me and what continues to grow within me. You've given me a new passion. Thank you SO much!! -Monique Renee Cordova
The last time I heard somebody complain about being too old to do something, I thought to myself, I hope I don't have so many problems when I get to their age. As it turned out, that somebody was younger than me!
My good health and energy not only feeds into but also feeds off of the practice of martial arts. It is an investment in mind and body, learning how to focus on accomplishment and progress.
No one here at Martial Artistry is left out. This school is about you and how you can reach goals, no matter how lofty they may seem. Martial Artistry has truly been a gem for me since I moved to NM. I have made friends, not just acquaintances. I have revived a dormant passion for an art so beautiful and unique, it has survived for over two millennia! What more could I say? Thank you Sifu. -James Esparza
All of the instructors have something helpful to say. I get to learn a variety of things. I feel inspired to improve my skills. -Nick
My wife and I have been going to martial artistry going on a little over two years and by far this is the best school I have seen and we both enjoy the friendly atmosphere in this school and would recommend this school to any one who wants to learn good true kung fu.
An amazing place to learn wushu, kick boxing, and northern shaolin kung fu.
