Monzano Mesa Multigenerational Center Grand Opening

With the burgeoning popularity of cable and DSL, we're experimenting with upgrading the quality (and therefore digital size) of our photos on the website, and we need your help.  Please take a moment to email us, and let us know if you find the download time for the new format too long, or if you're happier with the clearer photos.  Thanks for your assistance!

No matter where we go, we seem to have a great time, and this event was no exception.  One of the highlights of the Manzano Mesa grand opening was the performance by the Aztec Dancers.  They put on a colorful and informative display of the traditional dances of their people, and at the end, invited everyone to come up and join them.  Naturally, our kung fu, wushu, lion and dragon dance exhibition team couldn't resist.  Unfortunately, they couldn't dance, either. . .

But, enough horsing around -- time to get down, get serious, and get on with the show.  Here, our girls deliver on the martial promise of the warfan.  Those are Nicole Neff, Alex Daniels and Danielle Stender.

Reserve National Champion Monique Cordova and Instructor's Aide James Cole block an attack in Four Cloud Double-Head Spear.
Nick Montoya is caught mid-air in the front handspring.

Assistant Instructor Monique Cordova and Albert Vera finish a series of continuous cartwheels -- in splits.
Albert Vera, Lillie Vosa and Nick Montoya in the beginner's form, Kung Lik Kuen.

Jonah Donnarumma always excites the crow with his array of high-end, acrobatic techniques, such as . . .

. . . upside down in a layout position . . .

. . . wrapping horizontally in the butterfly twist . . .

. . . and getting vertical in a monkey staff side kick . . .

Fu, our flower-faced lion, and Li, our yellow lion, reach for the ceiling in a Southern Chinese lion dancing technique called "stacking".

Those are Instructor's Aides Michael Panto and James Esparza playing Fu, and Lion Dance Team Leader Diana Ma with Kip Barkhurst playing Li.

Ann Marie Palmieri, Nick Montoya and Nicole Neff display the swift, stabbing movements of the double daggers.

"Look Ma!  No hands!"

Alex Daniels splits in mid-air in the aerial cartwheel.

State Champion Toby Baca III and Reserve National Champion Monique Cordova conclude an evasive roll with a powerful thrust of their sabres.

(below)  Fu and Li face one another in the Double Lion Welcome routine.  This was Fu's second to last event before the crash that made a complete reconstruction necessary.  As you can see from this photo, it was becoming time.  Poor old Fu even looks tired.

Spellbound, the crowd watches Team Leader Amir Shirkhorshidian and State Champion Nancy Nguyen strike like phoenixes from the heavens in Blossoms on the Wind Straightsword.

Assistant Instructor Jason Padilla looks fierce and powerful as he wields the rare and beautiful wind and fire wheels.

Grace, beauty -- and deception!  Watch the hand, and feel the foot in the "look at moon" balance, demonstrated here by Assistant Instructor Monique Cordova and Lillie Vosa.

(below)  Every kung fu and wushu school should have a dragon!  Talk about your party animal!  Just watch those lights, Mushu!

Few can match State Champion Nancy Nguyen's grace, flexibility and balance in the "look at moon" pose.
Albert Vera and Lillie Vosa demonstrate great depth in the horse stance, or ma bu, as they play the warfan.

(below)  The conclusion of another outstanding kung fu, wushu, lion and dragon dancing performance by Martial Artistry's Team Steel Phoenix.  We have to remember to get Mushu in the next one of these . . .
