SELF DEFENSE: Kung Fu - Wushu Style

elbowbreak.JPG (11216 bytes) Kung fu and wushu are excellent styles for use in self-defense.  The circular motion inherent in kung fu and wushu make them efficient, even when the defender is much smaller than the attacker.  At left, Marialysia Abeyta demonstrates an elbow lock on Rudy Montoya.  Elbow locks are a fast, simple and very effective means of turning the table on an opponent.

Self defense is taught as part of the regular Kung Fu / Wushu curriculum at Martial Artistry, and not to be confused with tournament sparring, which is a rigidly controlled fighting situation with little resemblance to true combat. As a first line of defense, students are taught to avoid conflict. However, in the event that they may be confronted and unable to escape, students learn a variety of holds, grappling, locks, breaks and throws to disable an opponent. Only ongoing practice can give a student the swift and automatic reactions necessary to defend effectively, thus a "quick-fix" stand-alone course for self defense is not recommended.
